Here are some photos of our summer garden of 2005. We begin with a view of the new terraced hillside garden as it appears in April. As you can see it's just roughly carved out sand and a jumble of rocks. At the time it seemed a daunting task to make this into a garden. But of course I had a vision of what I would like.
The garden begins to take some form with a pathway shaped with wood chips I found by the roadside after the township cleared some trees.  Small rocks along the path edges and large flat flagstones for the steps. Oh, and a few plants as well.
To the right are some ornamental "hair" grasses which I started from seed. Hopefully they will survive our harsh winter climate and Zone 4 temps.
Later in the summer the terraced garden fills in with greens and yellows and licorice plant grays. On the steps you see the clover I used around the flagstone steps Later the clover got completely out of hand. There is also the ever present tarp with top soil underneath.
I plan to have many ornamental grasses and last fall I planted iris and allium bulbs in groupings. Can't wait to see the results in Spring. It seems the gardener is always in anticipation of the next years' results.
